The foundation for strong mental health is laid during childhood.
Improving mental health, particularly for children and adolescents in Germany: With this goal in mind, the Mental Health Alliance was launched on February 18, 2026. Prof. Silvia Schneider, Professor of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and Director of the Research and Treatment Center for Mental Health (FBZ) at Ruhr University, is participating in the nationwide initiative as a supporter.

The Mental Health Alliance brings together stakeholders from academia, healthcare, administration, and politics, as well as young people. Together, they are committed to establishing mental health as a key factor in a sustainable society. In light of increasing mental health challenges among children and adolescents, new approaches are needed that focus primarily on prevention and early intervention. The initiators and supporters of the Mental Health Alliance are the alv Foundation, the Beisheim Foundation, the Bertelsmann Foundation, krisenchat, ProjectTogether, and the Robert Bosch Foundation.

“We must think about mental health from the very first cell and shift our perspective—from a focus on illness to a focus on health,” emphasizes Silvia Schneider. “Only by putting scientific knowledge into practice—with expectant parents, in daycare centers, schools, and families—can we successfully shape prevention.” Furthermore, children and adolescents must be heard regarding their concerns in order to develop effective measures.

The Mental Health Alliance's research is aligned with the concept of the Ruhr Innovation Lab, which aims to contribute to a resilient and sustainable society.
